Card Ideas for Paper Crafters

Did you happen to see the post over at Paper Crafts Connections blog? There is a NEW special issue hitting news stands in August, an issue that I am super duper excited to get my hands on! Card Ideas for Paper Crafters (formerly known as Go-To Sketches) is a hugely popular bookazine that I was asked to design sketches for! I submitted 46 sketches that I made right before Winter CHA and I had six selected! Readers then submitted cards based on the sketches! Three fun filled facts that make me curl my toes with excitement are:

1. I was one of only four designers that had the most sketches picked up.
2. One of my sketches was one of the TOP 3 sketches for most submitted cards!
3. Even though I submitted cards for my sketches (none of mine were picked--haha!) I had two cards picked up for this HIGHLY competitive issue (I can't stress this enough!). And, I was able to get my other cards picked up for publication. DON'T GIVE UP!

Pebbles + Epiphany Crafts

Happy to get my hands on some fabulous Pebbles product. I used some Floral Lane paper and embellies as well as one of my favorites, heart epoxies from Epiphany Crafts.

That's it for me today!

Some pages from my brother's Guest Book

This weekend my brother and NEW sister got married! I am soooo excited! They asked me to make menu and escort cards, table numbers and a Guest book! I was thrilled beyond thrilled to help out. I actually made two guest books, but I only have a few pages and the cover of one to share, since time was tight and I didn't have enough time to take photos of the second one.

I had so much Portrait from Crate, and I knew that I wanted to use it for this project

Every seventh page was a lightly embellished page

It's fun layering embellishments and frames

I love die-cutting the little tags and layering them
together in a row.

Those little silhouettes are soooo perfect!

Some of the chipboard accents were a little bizarre...a bus stop sign? How to use??? So, I came up a with a little sentiment, "this way to love," and VOILA! It worked!

Okay, so I don't know if it was lack of sleep or a pure "duh" moment, but before I stuck this on the page, I thought the bird on the cage was a wedding dress....dear Lord.

That's it for me....today I have decided to surprise my dear hubby and clean out the garage!

Best Creation-Summer CHA Projects

Happy Summer CHA week everyone. I wasn't able to make it this time, but fortunate to be designing projects for the Best Creation booth, so make sure to check out their new lines for Fall and Christmas of 2011! They are pretty darn fantastic!

For my projects I used the new Hello Fall collection and Mom's Kitchen collection. First up are a frame and mini album showcasing the fun ways you can use the papers of the Hello Fall collection.

"First Sight" frame
The chipboard frame is from Maya Road and
covered with papers from "Hello Fall"

I am in love with spools, especially wooden ones
that are vintage. Wrapping paper, trim and adding embellishments
over them is fun! The spools are not only decorative, but also hold up the chipboard panel.

"Home Decor" Mini Album
This Punky Sprouts album has a fun combo of canvas, acrylic and chipboard pages. The cover page is acrylic and offers a little "sneak peak" of the pages inside.

I love rub on's on transparent surfaces

Trimming parts of a patterned paper that you like and adding them to a page creates a strong focal point

I love adding little areas of embellishment goodness.

Punches of color in the buttons and letters can anchor a color scheme.

Don't be afraid to use and mix punches when combining various patterned papers.

I love making DIY embellishments. This is a flower rolled from lace with a paper leaf.

I really enjoying just adding border stickers, punched shapes and random stitching.

"Recipe" collection
Did you know that Best Creation makes transparency sheets!? Way cool. I stitched two together to make a pocket for recipe cards from the new Mom's Kitchen collection.

Trim your patterned paper recipe cards to fit inside

"Made with Love" Card
I like trimming nostalgic images like a mix master and adding fun scalloped edges with a border punch. The gingham paper is too perfect!

Miniature spools wrapped in patterned paper make a fun little
banner

Now for some other projects that will be at the Best Creation booth using fun papers from June's Loop's and Scoops collection

"Ticket to Ride" Pop-Up Card
This line of paper was perfect for a pop up card.

When opened the train pops up in front of the roller coaster. One loop of the coaster and some fireworks "pop" with some foam tape.

Just cut slits on the inside of the paper, fold with the crease of the card and against, and attach what ever you want to pop up

"Graduation" Banner
Making a banner doesn't just need to include triangle shapes, try taking apart a chipboard album and use it! I used an album from Maya Road

Well that's it for me, stay tuned for more projects from me this week, and have fun at CHA!

Voting is live!!! Click to vote on my card!!

Voting Starts Now!

The first round for the Top 20 was to
use DIY embellishments on your card!

I love working in a style that I have deemed "shabby fresh," marked by color, clean design and layering of different embellishments.

The DIY Embellishments are flowers die cut
from patterned paper. They are then stitched together, dry-brushed with paint and are button-centered. Bending up the edges creates some dimension.

The inspiration came from fresh flowers sold at farmers markets and the like. They wrap your bunch of flowers in newsprint, so I  incorporated the newsprint into the card.

Make sure to register, and place your vote--I hope that you like mine enough to vote for it. My other fellow Top 20 have created some BEAUTIFUL work!

Voting for the Paper Crafts Idol Challenge begins Monday!

Guest Designer-Vintage Street Market

Hey there everyone! I have fun news to share. This month I am the featured guest designing with a fabulous company, Vintage Street Market. They sell wonderful kits with specialty paper and tags using nostalgic graphics and versatile accessories like their tinted tape. You can find the link right here!

The first project I made was button book is die cut from coaster board, which allows a thicker more stable surface to embellish. Button card stamps were applied to the pages as well as the printed cardstock die cuts that come from the Dimestore Vogue kit! Making a strong focal point with vintage items, pins, buttons and trim focuses the eye on key elements of each book.

Button Book

Because of the realistic shadows of these button dies, I backed them with foam dots to make them 'pop' off the card with dimension.

One of the fabulous aspects of these kits is that each element has shadows that make it look 3-d! To emphasize this feature I threaded the ribbon slider die cut with crochet trim to make the threader stand out and look 'real'.

Making your own embellishments with the crepe paper included in this kits was super fun and easy! Trim a strip of thin crepe paper to 1/2" x 5" and roll into a coil, twisting as you go. Add a pearl to the center and you have a fun little matching flower embellishment!

The next project that I created was a party favor box including games. The Party Games line is perfect for a kids party with it's fun colors, distinct images and it's sense of whimsy! I had a difficult time deciding on what to use since I love the polka dots and the collage of fun party-themed images. I decided on something that showcases the praticality of this line of product! So, I made a pillow box with party games that fit inside that you can give to each of your party-goers.

Kid's Party Favor Box with Games
The pillow box is a pre-made box from Paper Source that I lay flat. I traced the shape onto the polka dotted paper, scored along the folds, cut out and attached to the pillow box. Now, all you need is to decorate it!

I trimmed the red foil paper edge's with fringe scissors, then with pinking sheers and rolled them a little to add flair. Then I pleated the crepe paper to the foil trim and covered the 'seams' with ribbon for a clean look.

To make your own games to add to the color-by-number and connect-the-dots games, you can make "Bingo" and "Memory" games. To make the Bingo game you can make the Bingo chips with Epiphany Crafts Epoxy tool. Simply punch a circle from the patterned paper, and adhere the epoxy! They little chips fit perfectly in the squares. You could even play the game at the party (just make sure to change the numbers on each card, or else everyone will get "Bingo" at the same time!) To make the Memory card, simply punch the animals from the paper, back it with the same colored cardstock and create a little pouch from a kraft glassine envelope.

The next project that I made was trinket container that can hold sweet little gifts and tiny treasures.

Vintage Trinkets Holder
To emphasize the element of "notions" you can wrap little strips of patterned paper around wooden spools and use them to separate the tins and add height as well as hold! A wooden skewer holds a little pennant with the word "trinkets"

Adding some glitter glue brings out the cute scallops of the tins, and adds a pop of color!

The final project that I'd like to share is a wall hanging. They're easy peasy to decorate and people love to receive such thoughtful gifts.

Wall Hanging
I knew that an embroidery hoop would not only be a fun shape, but would go PERFECTLY with the Dimestore Vogue line! Simply place the outter (larger) hoop on your patterned paper, trace, trim and add mini slits inside the circle to help you smoothly fold the paper edges inside the hoops.

Die cutting spiral flowers from coordinating paper really draws everything together. Playing around with sentiments is the funnest part. I took a button image from the patterned paper that said "Friends" and placed it on a felt flower from Epiphany Crafts and then trimmed letters to spell out "Dear." Don't be afraid to make your own embellishments! The heart is a handmade epoxy from Epiphany Crafts that was affixed to eight folded circle punches!
